Pronouns in Genesis not altered by missing word stirps

3 February 2004;  Archbishop Francesco Canalini, H. E. The Apostolic Nuncio, PO Box 3633, Manuka, ACT 2603, Australia
Your Excellency,
I HAVEN'T FOUND THE LATIN WORD "STIRPS" YOU QUOTED:
MORE ABOUT "SHE" INSTEAD OF "HE" FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, GEN 3:15

It was with disbelief I studied the Latin Vulgate, Genesis chapter 3, and was unable to trace the Latin word stirps that you had quoted in your 25th August 2003 letter as the reason that the pronoun "he" changed to "she" in the Latin Rite's Genesis 3:15.
Would it be possible that some other word was meant? Or is there some other reason the explanation given needs amplifying?
Acting on your advice, I have written to my local pastor, and in addition I wrote to the local archbishop. Their answers were slightly closer to the right of it! But none of the four answers received has satisfied my doubts about this matter.
Again I request that you study this matter, and obtain an answer to my questions. Who, what, when, where, and why was this heretical translation made?
PRONOUNS IN GENESIS 3:15 ARE NOT ALTERED BY LATIN WORD "STIRPS"
To print this, first click in the Frame or, if no Frames, on the words "Pronouns in Genesis ..."
Then take it to Office Works, where you can produce each sheet for a few cents.
Was it made at or before the time of Jerome? Or was it being changed in time to confuse the scholars working under Popes Sixtus and Clement with their printed bibles (one being recalled and suppressed, the next differing in 3000 places)?
If you have a Hebrew scholar to consult with, perhaps you could ask him to check to the received version, or even variants, or study A Hebrew - English Bible, According to the Masoretic Text and the JPS 1917 Edition, © 2003 by Mechon Mamre for the HTML version.1  Gen 3:15 and following verses are on the enclosed sheet in Hebrew and English.
In case you don't have a Vulgate close to hand, try searching this for stirps2
[and it continued, Genesis chapter 3; summarised below]:
I look forward to your reply. Will stirps be found?
   Yours faithfully, [Signed]  Enc: 1

   Your Eminence,
I HAVEN'T FOUND THE LATIN WORD STIRPS THAT THE PAPAL NUNCIO QUOTED.
MORE ABOUT "SHE" INSTEAD OF "HE" FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, GEN 3:15

One would have thought that my previous responses to you would have been answered by now. Leaving aside my 13 May 2003 "demolition," my 28 June 2003 letter, showing you that the wrong translation of Genesis 3:13 had misled a writer of a 1909 training book for religion teachers into heresy, certainly deserved a pastoral approach. And my November 21, 2003 "open letter" "Neither repentance nor scholarship ..." [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/repentance.htm ] deserved a riposte.
But an even more serious matter has now come into the open. Archbishop Francesco Canalini, Papal Nuncio, based in Canberra, quoted a Latin word stirps to me as the explanation of the wrong translation of "he/his" as "she/her". This is incorrect, because stirps does not appear in Genesis chapter 3 as far as I can ascertain, and as far as an English academic knows from Vulgates available there.
As we were taught, "The Church is the pillar and ground of the truth," I must ask that you clarify this matter as soon as possible, and in a collegial spirit counsel your Canberra colleague.
It would seem that if a non-academic like me can find these things out, those more educated in these matters ought to have removed wrong translations such as this, and the other ones I pointed out in previous mail.
Prayers of contrition over these faults ought to be recited publicly every week on this and other matters, in my opinion.
The Church is under attack. The most effective attacks these days are from within, not by those writing or preaching unapproved material, nor even by clerics and others making light of the liturgy, but by criminals molesting children and thus bringing the Church into disrepute, losing Mass-attenders, wasting valuable time of people interested in working for salvation, and costing millions and millions in money. There are DAILY exposures of priest abusers old and new, and a bishop has suffered his second accusation in a week. (Other bishops have been removed from office for such crimes in the past two years.) Another book on the subject came out recently.
The external attacks include the blowing up of churches and murder of Christians in, for example, India, Africa, South America, and Muslim lands. Of the more subtle attacks there is, for instance, a threat to use the EU's human rights legislation to punish people circulating in Europe (and perhaps wider afield?) Vatican pronouncements on homosexuality. The Church has the problem that people now know that the clergy has a strong homosexual and child-abusing strain, the scripture frauds have not been quickly despatched, and the move to some unity with the Anglicans and Orthodox would necessarily mean the end, even if everyone pretended otherwise, of Papal Infallibility.
So, causes of friction, misunderstanding, and doubt ought to be removed quickly, don't you think?
Yours faithfully,
[Signed]

The Editor, Osservatore Romano, Vatican City
Dear Sir,
I HAVEN'T FOUND THE LATIN WORD STIRPS THAT THE PAPAL NUNCIO QUOTED.
MORE ABOUT "SHE" INSTEAD OF "HE" FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS, GEN 3:15

As a follow-up to my requests last year to five levels of the Church for reasons for, and information about, the centuries-old wrong translation of "he/his" as "she/her" in Genesis 3:15, I have recently discovered a more serious aspect. Archbishop Francesco Canalini, Papal Nuncio, based in Canberra, Australia, on 25 August 2003 [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/heshe.htm ] quoted a Latin word stirps to me as the explanation of the wrong translations. This is incorrect, 1. Because a Latin word can't affect the meaning of a Hebrew original, and, 2. Because stirps does not appear in Genesis chapter 3 as far as I can ascertain, and as far as an English academic knows from Vulgates available there. Is the Nuncio's answer (copy enclosed) fair to an inquirer after the truth?
First phase: In my efforts to show that the popular devotion, statues, pictures, and sermons of Mary treading on the neck of the Serpent were based on a wrong translation of Genesis 3:15, on 22 April 2003 1 I had written a letter to the Vatican " 'She' instead of 'He' for more than 1500 years" [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/heshe.htm ]. I sent such a letter to other people, including Sydney Archbishop Dr George Pell. In addition, on 28 June 2003 2 I wrote to him saying, "I have discovered that the gender change was used in a Catholic Manual 3 (in 1909 or earlier) to bolster the 1854 doctrine of the Immaculate Conception." This book stated "Gen. iii. 15 ... can only be fully understood when interpreted so as to imply the Immaculate Conception". Nothing could be further from the truth, and I quoted authorities. I stated that the verse had been "twisted and used to introduce and/or reinforce non-ecumenical doctrinal novelties."
2nd: I extended my field with letters to the Perth archbishop and the Greenwood parish priest on 28 August 2003, following them both up on 16 September. I ended up with answers from four levels of the hierarchy.
3rd: On 16 October 2003 I sent out copies of an "open letter" 4 entitled "Transgender Scriptures" [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/transgender.htm ], addressed to the Papal newspaper Osservatore Romano and to various levels of the Church. This countered the four different answers I had winkled out of four levels of the Church. (I lament the fact that good-hearted people like the local parish priest have been deceived by their superiors.) In addition, I enclosed a sheet from a webpage 5 showing a few more spurious changes to the Scriptures. One of these others was the forgery, in Latin manuscripts from about 800 AD, of the verse in the 1st Epistle of John, 5:7. The false verse was quoted by the Catholic Angelic Doctor Thomas Aquinas. 6
Later, Erasmus knew it was a forgery only found in some Latin and dependent translations. Modern scholars now believe that to confute him, a Greek manuscript was specially forged around 1520 in Oxford, England, by a Franciscan friar named Froy or Roy, 7 and found its way also into Protestant bibles, as follows, 1 John 5:7: "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one." This forgery has helped prevent countless thinkers in Western Christianity from unravelling the "mystery". Again, no response.
4th: At a family baptism on November 8, 2003, I was shown a United States Confraternity Bible 8 1953, which had the correct gender. This spurred me to more efforts, so on November 21 another "open letter" was sent, to Osservatore Romano and others, "Neither repentance nor scholarship... 9 ," [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/repentance.htm ] stating that the Confraternity Bible, and the authoritative Ronald Knox of Britain, 1954, knew that the Septuagint Greek had the masculine, and the Hebrew original has masculine or perhaps neuter, pronouns. I wrote that the mistranslation of Gen 3:15 was known to the Douay editors of 1955-56. No response came.
5th phase: Around 3 February this year while using the Internet I came across a Vulgate translation, checked Genesis chapter 3, and realised that the word stirps did not appear to be in it, although the word semen was. Feeling that I had not received "full measure" from the Apostolic Nuncio, on 3 February I wrote to him (letter enclosed) quoting chapter 3 in Latin, and enclosing some Hebrew as well from the Internet. No reply has been received. Perhaps he was busy preparing for the Australian Catholic Bishops' Conference. By using electronic-mail on 5 February I found out from a British bible expert that the word stirps is not in copies of the Vulgate available there -- and would be a bad translation, anyway. On 9 February, having received no reply from the Nuncio, I wrote to Cardinal George Pell of Sydney, and on the 10th started writing to others. May I stress that the modern inter-Church and other non-partisan translations are using the correct gender, and removing forgeries.
As we were taught, "The Church is the pillar and ground of the truth," I earnestly pray that his superiors and others counsel the Papal Nuncio to Australia, Archbishop Francesco Canalini, in a collegial spirit.
It would seem that if a non-academic like me can come across such mistranslations and forgeries, those people more educated in these matters ought to have removed wrong translations such as this, and the other errors.
Attacked from within: The Church is under attack. The most effective attacks these days are from within, not most importantly by those writing or preaching unapproved material, nor even by clerics and others making light of the liturgy, but more importantly by the hierarchy trying to keep up an appearance of inerrancy, and by criminals molesting children and women, and thus bringing the Church into disrepute, losing Mass-attenders, wasting valuable time of people interested in working for salvation, and costing millions and millions in money. There are DAILY reports of exposures of priest abusers old and new, and a bishop this month has suffered his second accusation in a week. 10 (Other bishops have been removed from office for such crimes in the past two years or so.) Some bishops are apologising and acting as if they meant it, but 18% of United States bishops breached 11 the new child protection codes that the Bishops' Conference had set up in 2000.
Molesters add to the publicity: Some clergy in various countries are opposing extradition to face trial for child abuse, thus prolonging and exacerbating the adverse publicity. The footnote gives the reference to a current NSW/NZ example.12 The sex-abuse plague, the forgery-speckled Bibles, and trying to defend the indefensible, as many bishops and other apologists are doing, have helped cause new books to appear, such as by the Papal biographer (Witness to Hope) Weigel 13, France,14 Powers15 , and by Berry and Renner 16 .
External attacks: The external attacks include the blowing up of churches and murder of Christians in, for example, India, Africa, South America, and Muslim lands, and persecutions by Communist and Muslim governments. Of the more subtle attacks there is, for instance, a threat to use the European Union's human rights legislation to punish people for circulating in Europe (and perhaps wider afield?) Vatican pronouncements on homosexuality. The Church has the problem that people now know that the clergy has a strong homosexual and child-abusing strain, the scripture frauds have not been quickly despatched, and the move to some unity with the Anglicans and Orthodox would necessarily mean the end, even if the various leaders pretended otherwise, of Papal Infallibility and supremacy in governance.
Clear the decks: So, other causes of friction, misunderstanding, and doubt, such as Gen 3:15, and the unnecessary snare in clerical celibacy, ought to be removed quickly, don't you think? I trust that our shepherds realise that the incorrect bibles are still on sale -- Douay (even on the internet), and the Vulgate. Is this moral? Why aren't the forgery-speckled Vulgates and Douays recalled and suppressed, as the Sixtine recension was by Pope Clement VIII in 1592?
Yours faithfully, [Signed]

False trail in search for Scripture accuracy
Dear Sir,
I HAVEN'T FOUND THE LATIN WORD "STIRPS" THAT THE AUSTRALIAN PAPAL NUNCIO QUOTED
Tracing the source of the popular statues of Mary treading on the Serpent

Last year I started trying to get Church leaders to give me a good explanation as to how the Latin Vulgate, Genesis 3:15, where God is punishing the serpent, changed the words "he" and "his" to "she" and "her" in the Latin and in translations, such as the Douay.
Archbishop Francesco Canalini, Papal Nuncio, based in Canberra, Australia, on 25 August 2003 [ http://www.multiline.com.au/~johnm/religion/heshe.htm#latin ], wrote :
In Latin, "stirps" is feminine. This explains the concordance. But you may consult your parish priest on the matter.
This month I accessed the Latin Vulgate on the Internet, and was scandalised to find that the word "stirps" is not in verse 15; in fact, it is not in Genesis chapter 3. Try Crosswalk Online Study Bible, http://www.biblestudytools.net/OnlineStudyBible/bible.cgi?passage=ge+3&version=vul&showtools=0 .
To answer my query with a false trail is not, in my opinion, helping our Church which is under so many attacks on its credibility, with daily exposures in the world's news media.
On February 3 [see above] I wrote to the Papal Nuncio, but there has been no reply. This would be about the fourth letter I have sent to him asking how the sex-reversal came about, and to suggest repentance by the Church. No reply has come.
I checked by e-mail with an English scholar, and she says "stirps" is not in any Vulgate Genesis 3:15 she has access to. Instead there is the word "semen" which means "seed", and is neuter, this scholar says.
Anyone who doubts that "she/her" is wrong ought to consult a Hebrew scholar, or perhaps visit this Internet website: A Hebrew - English Bible, According to the Masoretic Text and the JPS 1917 Edition, © 2003 by Mechon Mamre for the HTML version 1 at http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0103.htm .
Needless to say, I had written in 2003, without reply, to the Nuncio and others saying that no Latin word could alter the meaning of a more ancient Hebrew Scripture. I now [sic] know that the correct masculine pronouns were also in the Septuagint Greek translation.
I am deeply disappointed and scandalised.
Yours faithfully,
[Signed], Australia
P.S.: In case you don't have a Vulgate close to hand, try searching this for stirps: 2

2. Crosswalk Online Study Bible, http://www.biblestudytools.net/OnlineStudyBible/bible.cgi?passage=ge+3&version=vul&showtools=0 , sighted Feb 11, 2004

BACKGROUND: On April 22, 2003, a letter to Dr George Pell, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, expressed the hurt that the writer felt that the RC Bibles for centuries had misquoted the verse at Genesis 3:15, and built a theology on the idea that Jesus' mother Mary was, figuratively, crushing Satan (in serpent form), and Satan was trying to strike her heel.
Arising from this mistaken translation there were sermons, statues, paintings, and quotations in learned books along these lines. The wrong theology arose because someone in the Latin Rite hundreds of years ago changed "he/his" into "she/her" in translations, in spite of the evidence of the oldest manuscripts then, and learned discussions in ancient, mediaeval, and modern times. The RC leaders have resisted correcting the error.
An accurate translation of the story, where the Lord God is giving the serpent his punishment for tempting Eve into sin, includes this at Genesis 3:15:
15. And I shall put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel.
The Roman Catholic Confraternity Bible, U.S., 1953, uses the masculine pronoun "he" and the term "his heel". This webpage could not contain all the proofs that for centuries the meanings of the Hebrew orginals have been known to be masculine.
Instead of being corrected, the traditional Latin Vulgate Bibles (revised repeatedly in other ways, students will learn) and translations from it have continued misleading the people. In English, the Rheims-Douay Bible translators of 1609 for Genesis 3:15 have:
15. I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. 3
Except for the centuries of wrong teachings and practices, there is no real problem. The Hebrew has "he" and "his." Leaving aside the contrary RC translations, it is only when other translators try to INTERPRET the meaning in their translations that there is seeming confusion. It is generally believed that these words refer to the "seed," which is taken to mean the "descendants" or "progeny". So we see variants such as "it/his" (King James Version 1611), "it/its" (Zamenhof 1927, New Jerusalem 1985), and "them/their" (Mechon Mamre, using a Jewish translation of 1917). 4
Reply from the Vatican's diplomatic representative: After a reminder, on August 25, 2003, the Pope's man and member of the diplomatic corps, Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Francesco Canalini, replied, as mentioned above. See the letter for the 31-word answer.
In spite of letters sent opposing the views of the four who replied, and letters higher up to the RC headquarters and its official central newspaper, no reply had been received up to February 3, 2004. It would seem that there is no rush by the shepherds to rescue the straying sheep from his way of thinking! The four replies dampened the receiver's spirits.
For those brought up in a Church atmosphere, Archbishop Francesco Canalini's attempt, by bringing in the fugitive Latin word stirps, to explain away a sturdily-maintained false translation of the Hebrew language equivalent of "he/his", is quite discouraging. Surely a multilingual person like he ought to be knows better. (It has no relevance, except to suggest that the Archbishop or his staff might not have referred to books before replying, but the word used for the "seed" in the Vulgate seems to be the Latin word semen, which seems to be masculine, not feminine. Not being a scholar, I stand to be corrected. -- Religion Clarity Campaign, ~ 4 Feb 2004)
Oremus, Let us pray.
On February 5, 2004, an e-mail from a London academic, discussing the matter, stated, among other things, "The word 'semen' (which is neuter) in Latin means 'seed', which is a valid translation of the Hebrew word 'zara'. 'Stirps' means 'race' or 'family', which would not, in my estimation, be the best rendering of 'zara', although it is possible. The editions of the Vulgate that I have to hand have 'semen', ..." [And so does the one we quoted from the Internet]
The Apostolic Nuncio has not replied to the previous two responses to him, including the November 21, 2003 "open letter" titled "Neither Repentance Nor Scholarship About Mary Treading On Serpent, 'Three That Bear Record In Heaven' -- And Child Abuse," and the one which is the subject of this webpage, dated February 3, 2004, which has the short title: "I Haven't Found The Latin Word "Stirps" You Quoted." None of the others answered, nor did the Vatican bureaucracy. Can any reader guess why? -- Religion Clarity Campaign, Feb 9, 2004.
